Making 3D Heritage FAIR: Join Us in Mainz for the DFG 3D-Viewer Conference

The digital revolution has transformed how we preserve the past. From laser-scanned cathedrals to high-fidelity 3D reconstructions of ancient artifacts, our libraries, museums, and archives are now home to a massive surge of digital spatial data. But as these collections grow, a critical question remains: How do we ensure these 3D models remain accessible, interoperable, and preserved for the next century?

The FAIR 3D HERITAGE conference, which is heading to Mainz this September, will tackle these questions.

Save the date: 14–16 September 2026 at the LUX-Pavillon.

Bridging the Gap Between Code and Culture

It is organised jointly by the SLUB Dresden, Hochschule Mainz and Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

For those unfamiliar with the technology, the DFG 3D-Viewer is an open-source extension of the standard DFG Viewer. Built on Kitodo.Presentation, it utilises a three.js component to bring 3D models directly into the browser. The source code for the entire DFG Viewer and all its components is open source and can be found on GitHub.

However, this event isn’t just for developers. We aim to bring together:

  • Heritage researchers documenting the past,
  • Infrastructure providers who build digital repositories,
  • Software developers creating the tools we use every day.

Call for Papers:

The organisers are currently seeking contributions that push the boundaries of how we handle 3D data. We welcome submissions on theoretical and methodological issues, application scenarios and projects, as well as innovative approaches and tools.

The deadline: You have until 31 March 2026 to submit your proposal.

Why attend?

As well as the formal presentations, this is a chance to influence the implementation of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) 3D data in the German research landscape and beyond. The LUX-Pavillon in Mainz is a fantastic venue for spontaneous brainstorming, which is exactly what makes in-person conferences so valuable.

Ready to contribute? Check out the full details and submission portal on the official conference website.

We look forward to seeing the future of 3D heritage in Mainz!
